Petticoat Square

I found a list of lesser known cinema graphic gems on Netflix. The first I watched was iBoy, a sci fi crime story that unfolds in the centre of London. I quickly discovered that I had visited the area where the story is situated: an ugly housing quarter called Petticoat Square, at the end of Petticoat Lane. I did not actually visit that place, but the eyesore did attract my attention while walking along Petticoat Lane Market.

The film only gets a score of 6 on IMBD, but I enjoyed it, but then I like a good film noir.

Ik vond een lijst met minder bekende film pareltjes beschikbaar op Netflix. De eerste film die ik zag was iBoy, een sci fi misdaadverhaal dat zich in het centrum van Londen afpeelt. Ik ontdekte snel dat ik het gebied bezocht waar het verhaal zich afspeelt. Een lelijk woonkwartier dat Petticoat Square heet, op het einde van Petticoat Lane. Ik bezocht het woonkwartier zelf niet, maar deze doorn in het oog trok mijn aandacht doen ik de markt in Petticoat Lane bezocht.

De film krijgt een score van amper 6 op IMBD, maar ik genoot er van, maar dan een film noir is wel mijn ding.

Een appartement met 1 slaapkamer kost je wel een slordige 1.800 euro per maand hier.

A Life not Lived

Just outside Highgate Cemetery in north London, a bench reminds of a life never lived or only shortly lived. It can be hard being a parent.

Net buiten de Highgate begraafplaats in noord Londen, herinnert een bank aan een leven dat nooit of maar kort geleefd werd. Het kan hard zijn om ouder te zijn.

Nash’s House

One of my visitors remarked that it is a good thing that a house like Shakespeare’s birthplace still stands today. And she is absolutely right, as houses round 1600 were mainly built using wood. Open fires were used to cook and heat, so about 50% of all houses constructed then fell prey to fire. Nash’s House, now a museum, in Stratford upon Avon is another good example of a survivor. But Shakespeare’s final residence, just next to Nash’s House, remains only in ruins.

Een van mijn bezoekers merkte op dat het een goede zaak is dat huizen zoals Shakespeare’s geboortehuis nog overeind staan vandaag. En ze heeft gelijk omdat in 1600 huize voornamelijk in hout gebouwd werden. Koken en verwarmen gebeurde meestal op open vuren, dus gemakkelijk 50% van alle huizen brandden af. Nash’s House, nu een museum, in Stratford upon Avon is nog een goed voorbeeld van een overlever. Maar Shakespeares laatste woonplaats, net naast dit huis, bestaat alleen nog als ruïne.

Canary Wharf

The passive cranes remind of a time when this was the hub of seatrade with the Canary Islands. The Islands were also a hub. Ships would unload their cargo from India and South America on the Islands for further distribution to Europe and England. Lots of tea and coffee.

De passieve kranen herinneren aan een tijd wanneer dit de spil was van de zeehandel met de Canarische Eilanden. Die waren op zich ook een spil. Schepen losten er hun vracht uit India en Zuid-Amerika voor verdere distributie naar Europa en Engeland. Heel veel thee en koffie.

Equatorial Telescope

The Equatorial Telescope in the Royal Observatory in Greenwich was completed in 1893 and is still in use today. It has been modernised and is driven by a computer these days. It was retired for research into double stars in 1960 and has been used for educational purposes in the field of astrophysics ever since.

I took this photo with my parabolic fisheye lens and found that the lens profile was not present on my PC when I was processing the photo. I had dowloaded it in the past, but repairing my PC from factory settings some months ago I did not bother to reinstall it. So the corrections, that are not 100%, were done manually.

De equatoriale telescoop in de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht in Greenwich werd in 1893 opgeleverd en wordt vandaag nog steeds gebruikt. Het werd wel gemoderniseerd en wordt door een computer aangedreven.
In 1960 mocht de telescoop op pensioen gaan van zijn taak in onderzoek naar dubbele sterren. Het wordt sindsdien voor onderwijsdoelstellingen gebruikt in het veld van astrofysica.

Ik nam deze foto met mijn parabolische fisheye lens en ontdekte dat ik het lensprofiel niet meer op mijn PC staan heb. Ik had dat in het verleden geïnstalleerd, maar toen ik enkele maanden terug mijn PC moest herstellen vanaf fabrieksinstellingen heb ik mij de moeite niet meer getroost om het profiel te herinstalleren. Ik deed de correcties op deze foto manueel, dus ze zullen niet 100% correct zijn. Waarvoor mijn verontschuldigingen.

Synchronise Watches

The red ball on top of the building in the back would rise to reach the top at exactly 1 PM. This would allow the ships on the Thames below to set their clocks.

De rode bal bovenop het gebouw stijgt naar het hoogste punt op exact 13u. Zo konden de schepen op de lager gelegen Theems hun klokken juist zetten.
