When visiting Cornwall last summer, I was charmed by the simple beauty of the little village of Flushing, just across the Penryn River from the port and docks of Falmouth, separated by Carrick Roads.
It surprises me that this village houses just over 600 inhabitants, it looks too small for that when you walk the narrow streets that weren’t designed for cars to be able to pass one another.
Part of Cornwall’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, founded in 1661, flushing housed the captains and officers of the packet ships that docked in Falmouth. The village was named after the Dutch village with the same name after Dutch engineers built the 3 main quays in the village.
My cousin proposed this village as a good place to let the dog enjoy the beach and a swim. The beach is not that big, but it is dog friendly.

A reader asked what about Covid, Brexit and my business?
I will try to explain in a couple of posts.
Covid had been making my weekly shopping trips to the UK for my business difficult since March.
But the shit really hit the fan on Sunday December 20. On arriving in the UK for a planned 2-day trip, I learned that the borders would close at midnight and I then had no idea that Eurotunnel would shut down at 22:00.
I needed to cram 2 days of shopping into 1, that one being the Sunday, when everything opens late and closes early in the UK.
I replanned my trip while on the road, and it all worked out, I made it back before Eurotunnel closed with about 80% of my planned shopping, which is not bad considering.
I had already decided that this would be my last trip in December & January, as I need time to reorganise for Brexit. That will be the most important project in January, I kicked off the project team today.
This new version of Covid confirms that this is a good idea. I plan my shopping trips so that I have no contact with people on the other side, but the photo shows that you need to queue for a hour to get into Tesco for a sandwich and a drink. Kent was tier 4 at the time of this photo, so all pubs/restaurants are closed.

Ik probeer dit te verduidelijken in een paar posts.
Covid bemoeilijkt al mijn wekelijkse shopping trips naar het VK sinds maart.
Maar het werd pas écht moeilijk op zondag 20 december. Ik was pas in het VK voor een tweedaagse wanneer ik vernam dat de grens om middernacht gesloten zou worden. Ik wist dan nog niet dat Eurotunnel om 22u zou sluiten.
Zo moest ik de geplande 2 dagen shoppen in 1 dag doen, en dan nog de zondag, wanneer alles later opent en vroeger sluit.
Ik herplande mijn trip op de baan en dat lukte, ik keerde terug voor Eurotunnel sloot met zowat 80% van mijn geplande aankopen, niet slecht gezien de omstandigheden.
Ik had voordien al beslist dat dit mijn laatste trip in december zou worden en dat ik in januari ook niet zou over gaan om zo tijd te vinden om te reorganiseren voor Brexit. Dat is het belangrijkste project voor januari, ik startte vandaag het project team daarvoor op.
De nieuwe versie van Covid bevestigde de noodzaak van dit plan. Tijdens mijn shopping trips heb ik geen contacten met mensen aan de overzijde, maar de foto toont dat je zowat 1u moet aanschuiven om Tesco binnen te raken voor een broodje en een drankje. Kent was ‘tier 4’ op het moment van de foto, dus alle restaurants, pubs en eettenten zijn gesloten.

Just like me, Liam Gallagher is a great fan of John Lennon. But Liam did what I dared not: he named his son Lennon. Yoko Ono told him she thought it was a silly name and that she feared the boy would get teased because of it. Liam replied that it is a bit silly being called Yoko. They ended up having a cup of tea.
Liam Gallagher en ik hebben toch een iets gemeen: wij zijn fan van John Lennon. Maar Liam deed iets waarvoor ik niet de moed had: hij noemde zijn zoon Lennon. Yoko Ono zei dat ze het een gekke naam vond en dat ze vreesde dat de jongen er mee gepest zou worden. Liam antwoordde dat hij Yoko maar een geke naam vond. Ze bezegelden deze discussie met een kopje thee.
We have been blessed by the weather all week here on Schouwen-Duiveland. The photo shows Vinyl on the beach at Renesse earlier this week, we actually had lunch on a terrace outside on the beach. The big storm is starting to hit here, advice is to stay inside after lunchtime. But we are behind a tall dyke, so we should be OK.
Al gans de week gezegend door het weer hier op Schouwen-Duiveland. In de foto zie je Vinyl op het strand te Renesse eerder deze week. Wij lunchten er op een buitenterras op het strand.
De grote storm is hier intussen aangekomen, er wordt gevraagd om na de middag binnen te blijven. Maar wij logeren net achter een hoge dijk, dus ik maak mij weinig zorgen.
